Real People. Real Stories. Real Solutions.
Deanne’s life turned upside down in a matter of months last year. A devastating fire robbed her of her long-time home, and shortly after, she lost her husband, Robert to illness. Suddenly finding herself alone, with nothing left but memories and grief, Deanne faced the daunting task of rebuilding her life from scratch.
The fire not only consumed their belongings but also engulfed important documents and records, leaving Deanne in a state of uncertainty. She and Robert were temporarily staying in a hotel when a glimmer of hope emerged through a family member’s connection to Community Rebuilders.
Kent County is proud to have achieved Functional Zero for Veteran Homelessness, which means that every Veteran has access to the support they need and want so they can avoid staying on the street and move quickly to permanent housing. Community Rebuilders is proud to lead this effort with many Veteran focused programs.
Deanne, a Veteran of the Air Force who had worked in healthcare and raised a family on her own, was about to discover a lifeline she never knew existed. At first, she couldn’t believe that help was within reach. Her first step, moving into transitional housing, provided a stable foundation as she embarked on the daunting task of locating essential documents and navigating unfamiliar resources for Veterans.
The Community Rebuilders team worked with Deanne to find the perfect apartment, and she prepared to move in. Community Rebuilders Beautifully Home program provided basic household furnishings, making this apartment into a home. Deanne found herself excited about the prospect of having her own furnished apartment, a place she could call home again. She envisioned framing photos of her and Robert, creating a space filled with cherished memories and new beginnings.
Her new apartment, nestled close to family and with a balcony shaded by a beautiful tree, symbolizes a fresh chapter in Deanne’s life. She looks forward to spending warm evenings on the balcony, surrounded by loved ones and creating new traditions.
For Deanne, the biggest impact of this journey wasn’t just securing a place to live; it was the profound realization that people cared. Strangers from Community Rebuilders and other community organizations had shown her compassion and support, restoring her faith in humanity during a time of immense loss and vulnerability.
Reflecting on her journey, Deanne shared, “When you have lived someplace for 20 some years, you own the place, and the next day it’s gone. You’re wondering ‘Where am I going to go?’ The task seemed monumental.” But through the kindness of strangers and the stability of a new home, Deanne found resilience and hope. She acknowledged the difficulty of accepting help but emphasized the transformative power of community and compassion in rebuilding a life after tragedy.
Deanne’s story is a testament to the impact of housing-focused solutions and the unwavering dedication of Community Rebuilders to ending homelessness. It’s a story of loss, resilience, and ultimately, hope—a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there are brighter days ahead for those who dare to believe in a better future.
